How to write creatively is a question often asked when a writer is facing writer’s block or word dearth. The frustration peaks since the writer has run out of ammunition to fire novelties. On the other hand, a novice, with zero experience at writing, but brimming with thoughts might also ponder over the question of how to write creatively. So here is my list of some ways to help you write creatively:

Cast yourself away from PC: At times friend, at times foe. This juggler’s box that still doesn’t cease to amaze us can at times prove to hinder most brutally. Carrying yourself away from the computer helps in breaking ice on the blocked up gush of thoughts and ideas.

Jump Out of the Box: I do not comprehend this most beaten cliché’. How can one not change surroundings, situations and routing and still expect to dish out novelties? Somebody thinking about Abracadabra! To think out of the box, you need to jump out of the box first a.k.a. change, in or out. Btw, you can also give a shot at changing habits, not the goaded ones but a little tweak, here and there.

Learn from kids: Kids have a knack of picking things with their true meaning. They cannot comprehend the details due to limited experience but whatever they perceive and pick are raw realities . Freeing ourselves from the emotional complications of life, looking at things in their true colors, helps in speeding up the creative writing process.

Find a Perk palace: To write creatively, one got to think. To think you need a spacing that does not hinder. Now for everyone there comes a different appeal towards settings and situations. There would be for you. For me it is a brief stroll in my backyard or a few hours with old friends. It helps me to loosen up, share and shape thoughts into words, conversing over aimless things, hence providing myself with a neat flow. Do find yours to catch up with unhindered flow of creativity.

Read, read and read: To water your production house, read stuff that is inspirational and stimulates you up to write something of your own. One mistake that I used to make was, trying to keep my reading into a marked up line with a few authors. The more you expand authors, more writing styles you come across. When you switch from one author to another, you can even see the words change their meanings in usage and this tends to be a hallmark for your own creative writing.

Flaunt your wings: Everyone has got a personal talent or inclination. Exploit that for your writing. Flaunt your knowledge with self assertion and style. By the end of the day, not only will you have material but a sense of personal achievement as well. If you are afraid of straying away from your blog’s cliché then remember that first of all it is your blog and you can write anything that comes to your mind. Secondly, readers only love the personal touch in things. so it is ok to occasionally rant about your cat, dog or kids

Natural Callings: Writing something about things that comes naturally doesn’t require singing your own praises, rather the authority shines itself through words. so give a must-shot to things that interest and inspire you to write creatively.

One pint sugar, half a pint salt, loads of ice, that’s how I make my lemonade.

Two pints of beaten coffee, full milk with occasional cream, that’s what makes my ideal cup of coffee.

How do you like yours?

An exacting culinary essence is made by mixing a series of individual flavors. There is no standard recipe for any culinary specialty, since it all depends, how creative a cook can get. Over time, I have come up with my own personal delights.

Now thinking, I wonder how does one get to invent a particular specialty. You get the basic ingredients, throw in some trial spices, cook on an intuitional-whim, tweak a few more ingredients and bingo, you get a new gastronomic delight.

Now let’s break it in pieces and pick up a thing or two from kitchen heroics.

When you cook creatively, you tend to stick to a few primary rules:

Basic Ingredients (a flavored cappuccino without coffee beans is creative, but not a cappuccino),

Main Frame (even the most innovative pizza would have the hierarchy of bread, cheese and topping)

Cooking Methodologies (no matter what your cookie’s batter is made off, it still has to take its sun bath in the oven.)

Similarly, whilst writing creatively, you do not have to let go in all directions. It’s best to let go, but only if you know where your feet are. Balancing on a solid ground and then experimenting with ideas and thoughts from a concrete base would fetch results, fast and furious.

Tying up the chef’s apron again, imagine if you are to invent a recipe from scratch. Where would you be? Of course, in the mid of nowhere! Grabbing at straws out of thin air might give some initial sparks to start on a new project, but unfortunately it would never lead anyplace further. So that is how you start on with a writing project. You hunt down and pick a few basic rules to stick to. Upon these, you slowly build a pyramid of ideas. Borrowing from spatial creativity and innovative spurs you edit and re edit your work. At the same time the better you know what you are cooking, the better results you ought to achieve.

So, the next time you commence a writing project, do think and prepare, by donning a chef’s hat to get the exacting flavor.

Indulge into a prolonged reverie

Procrastinate

Creative Writing Exercise 1: Feeling

Creative writing is all about imagination. Imagination begets inspiration, which itself is the child of emotional feelings. And the irony of twenty-first century is that we are too busy to feel. Yes, even the most inventive of us. Around the blogosphere I have repeatedly seen lengthy discussions (tips and techniques) to spur up creativity and the like. Sadly while pursuing so many tips we forget the vital ingredient _ Feeling!

Emotional connectivity with surroundings and happening is the aphrodisiac that sets a writer’s fuels on fire. To evoke ripples in the stagnant pond of mind, we need to constantly throw in pebbles of sensation.

Creative Writing Exercise 2: Observing

Recalling a stanza from William Davies’ Leisure…

No time to turn at Beauty’s glance,

And watch her feet, how they can dance

No time to wait till her mouth can

Enrich that smile her eyes began

Observation is the hand maid of inspiration. Again if you observe with feelings, you get enough creative writing prompts to last you a lifetime. Observing with sentiment in itself is the best creative writing exercise that you can come up with. The key is to be explicit when you take to the pen. The more open and original you are with the word that you write, the more you will gain in quality and novelty.

Even the smallest of observations can set you on the roll; a dew drop, frost on the window pane, a swirling fan, rustling leaves, misty fog and the list is endless.

Creative Writing Exercise 3: Relating

To write creatively, one has to submerge him/herself entirely into the theme that can lead to a creative writing prompt to develop. The more one feels connected to a particular object or scenario the less one feels at a loss of words. I believe searching for words during creative writing process is more of a discovery than an invention. The words are always there, nested somewhere deep in our sub conscious. All we have to do is call the right code to get them moving.

Creative Writing Exercise 4: Meditating

Yoga would never go out of league. But meditation is not all about deep breathing, posture and balance. It is about connecting and exploring one’s own self, in depth. Tapping into the virgin abodes of our potential is better than a treasure hunt. Meditate at your own expanse and like, and discover the buried fortunes. Who knows, some creative writing exercise might do much for a little self development as well.

Creative Writing Exercise 5: Imagining

Creative writing borrows a lot from imagination and fascination. One never knows which heeds whom. Sampling imagination into words and sentences can help a lot in writing up pieces that you can later thread together. Creative imagination also helps to cast off the dull clouds. For more tips, check out the practices for clear and creative thinking.

Creative Writing Exercise 6: Hijacking

There are copyright issues for stealing words and ideas but there is no tab in hijacking inspiration. So feel free to steal inspiration from the works already produced. A story or a film will end yet it might give you a new twist or beginning. Next time, while reading a novel or watching a movie, think and plan about “your own to be continued.”

Creative Writing Exercise 7: Escaping

Escapism is the best course to close off the harsh realities of the world, no doubt. Why not turn a mental diversion into a golden resource. When there are so many means to choose from, then why not pick the one that is the most beneficial one. Art is the child of poverty, hunger, plight, and confiscation. Dark ages lead to the period of Renaissance that was the time-womb of the most celebrated pieces ever produced in all respects of art.

Next time when you are holding onto the strings of mental tribulation, give a thought about churning them into little nuggets.

Creative Writing Exercise 8: Remembering

Déjà vu’!

At times to set the mental butterflies swarming in creative psychedelics, one needs to feel from the past. There are so many moments in everyday life that bring some kind of unknown recall. Capturing the feel and sensation, translating into words, a few tweaks here and there, can lead a writer to produce a rare novelty.

If you have any tip or advice, that has helped you in producing worthy stuff owing to some creative writing exercise that you use, please do share with the rest of us!

About Creative Writing Ideas

Simply stating, creative writing ideas are the mental imagery that a writer gives birth to, and then translates into words. Deliberation on how to generate creative writing ideas can be best done, if we break the concept into two chunks to work with.

Creative Ideas: These are the idiosyncrasies of a writer’s upper chamber that he/she wants to translate into words.

Writing: This is the collection of words that are meant to communicate the feelings, perceptions and visions of a writer to the external world.

Trouble in Generating Creative Writing Ideas

Whether you are writing fiction, poetry or simply working on a creative journal, it happens to everyone- the dearth of creative writing topics or ideas at some point. On the other hand, there are many writers who claim never to run out of ideas, rather complaining about lack of time to attend to all of theirs.

But this is not because one set of people have more availability of a creative spur that is not enjoyed by the other set. Creative potential is possessed by everyone (whether you know it or not). It is just a matter of how you tap into your internal resources and call them forth to your service.

Mick Jagger, the famous rock star, once put it this way:

It’s all right letting yourself go, as long you can get yourself back

So the little mark that separates one group from the other is the art of, “letting go of oneself yet catching again”. This is the alchemy of the successful writers out there.

Finding Inspiration for Creative Writing Ideas

Inspiration is all around us. In fact coming to see it, we are always surrounded by inspiration. One does not have to go to the Swiss Alps to be touched by Mother Nature, to drive inspiration. She is ever present. It is the way we see even the smallest of normal day things around us that can spur up a juicy flow of writing prompts. You can draw inspiration from a lone swing swaying, a fleshy apple resting on the kitchen cabinet, or a chime hanging in your driveway.

Sounds, scents, scenes all in a fraction of moment can ingrain the most novel of ideas in our brains. One just needs to train his/her eyes, ears and other senses to tune into the surroundings to catch vibes inciting the creative cells into motion.

Creative Writing Ideas and Writer’s Burnout

A writer’s burnout is that stage during a creative writing process, in which he/she runs out of ideas, connection between the characters or a saturated situation is reached where the writers do not know, what to do with the various elements of their plot.

The most simplest and useful technique, that I have seen to work for me is, “getting away from the mess and forgetting about it”. The internet is a darling friend when it comes to search and looking up information but it can also be the deadliest foe when we need solitude to work on matters. One can lock himself/herself in a room sans interruption while trying to work out creative writing ideas.

But no fooling right!

And what to do with the biggest interruption sitting right in front of you_your PC. Best recourse is either to return to pen and paper or find solace in some other part of the house. But if you are a computer freak like me and cannot imagine to write two words without MS Word, then DISCONNECT THE NET. Don’t worry, you won’t land into Stone Age with just one unplug. Even if you do, you can always return to the 21st century by re-plugging.

Borrowing Creative Writing Ideas

Man can never be an omnipotent creator of anything. Whatever we produce; stories, songs, films, paintings etc are inspirations drawn from somewhere and someplace. Every creative leash has its saddle tied to some instance of conscious or unconscious inspiration. So why not make use of this concept in a more proactive manner.

The method of “written cut-up” was introduced by the famous Romanian Dadaist poet, Tristan Tzara. He believed that all kinds of writing are in fact cut ups threaded together like in the work of a collage artist and are similar to different frames in a single film. So he gave the idea of cutting up a page into small pieces from a newspaper or an old magazine and stuffing them up in a hat. You can then lift the pieces, one by one to form a poem or a short story or just to get ideas.

One never knows, what might set one’s creative fuels on fire!

Breeding Your Own Creative Writing Ideas

To breed and build upon your own creative writing ideas, you need to religiously follow creative writing exercises coupled with the right creative writing activities to bring out the best out of your untapped resources.

Like a good ballet dancer, the mind needs to be lithe, flexible and supple to deliver the best performance. A ballerina diets and exercises to death, to attain that flexibility. Like her, we also need to provide our brains with the necessary workouts to get the best out of ourselves.

Creative thinking is a matter of mind. Like a good ballet dancer, the mind needs to be lithe, flexible and supple to deliver the best performance. A ballerina diets and exercises to death, to attain her coveted flexibility. Like her, we also need to carry out some necessary workouts to get the best out of our upper chambers.

Here is a collection of the most overlooked practices that can help writers to polish their creative thinking abilities for creative writing process.

Breathing

Deep breathing, a most often beaten mantra for all kinds of yoga and meditation, unquestionably helps in balancing our mental faculties and increase in focus. Deep breathing makes our red blood cells happy and their robustness lets us to think and plan with vigor.

Deep breath through your nose by making use of your diaphragm

Draw air deeper into your lungs

Take several deep breaths by letting go of everything else

Doing this for 3 to 4 times a day, you’ll notice a clearer brain with an increased ability to focus, think and plan.

Bearing

The way we carry ourselves marks a lot in impressions, style and persona, nevertheless it marks equally well for our thinking process.

You can test this yourself by doing math in your head while slouching, lying down or being in a way too comfortable position. Now again do some mental math while sitting up straight, having an erect posture or looking forward or slightly upwards. You’ll notice that it’s easier to think reasonably while bearing the later postures.

Sniffing

Sniffing fresh air with lush foliage around, helps anyone to clear up their mind. But there are a few souvenirs by Mother Nature that can do the job much better.

Rosemary: A very common herb, is popular for having a wake-up effect on the brain. Though not supported by research, but it is used by many people for clearing up their minds.

Basil: Another nugget from the pot of herbs, for thinkers, is popular for its affect on clear thinking and focus.

Listening

While writing this, I recall a punch line from Tom & Jerry, ‘Mozart makes babies smart.’ Couldn’t make much sense of it at that time, but today it translates well.

A study at University of California, discovered children who studied piano or participated in chorus to exhibit better puzzle solving capabilities, with 80% higher scores in spatial intelligence than their non-musical fellows.

In another study, 36 students were given three spatial reasoning tests based on standard IQ parameters.

First Test: They were made to listen to Mozart’s sonata for Two Pianos in D Major, K. 448 for ten minutes.

Second Test: Heard a relaxation tape.

Third Test: Observed silence for ten minutes.

Results:

Average scoring was tabulated for the 36 students, showing following scores for the three tests:

First Test: 119.

Second Test: 111.

Third Test: 110.

The mental faculties of humans borrow a lot from the “awakening of senses”. Like exercising for our bodies’ lithe and balance, we need to tune our minds by exercising the senses. This helps in gaining a mental equilibrium and balance that surely is a keygen for creative writing and the like.

Eating

Yet again, like going green for an agile body we need to go green for the creative cells to function smartly. A smart body coupled with a smart mind, not a bad deal, eh!

Mark sugar as a big no-no. Any kind of carbohydrates (simple or complex) give you "brain fog”, also known as the "sugar blues", hindering clear thinking.

Avoid pasta, sugars, white bread and potato chips before any important brainstorming session as these tend to blur concise thoughts.

Breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince and dinner like a beggar, is a famous mantra. A healthy breakfast complements mental and physical powers. To this, both research and common experience, suffice.

Creatine is a compound found in meat, used by athletes to help build muscle. A research study published in journal, Royal Society showed that the supplement aids in improving memory and mental agility.

Nuts hold vast traps of minerals and amino acids that are valuable for healthy brain. Most common ones are almonds and walnuts.

Olive oil, high in mono-unsaturated fat, has proved to improvise memory and mental agility.

Vitamins, with their established benefits for the body, work equally great for the mind. Since the benefits are goaded well in all of us, so there so no need to go into their beneficiary details. Just a reminder!

Hope, these practices would give you valuable insights to improvise your critical thinking and analytical writing abilities.

What is a Creative Writing Process?

Creative Writing Process means to write or produce imaginative works, setting aside the principles of conventional writing. To write creatively, one has to conjure up a plethora of imagery into coveted words that would appeal to the senses.

Now, creativity itself knows no bounds or pre-defined set of principles, rather it is a momentous flow that can flood any person (writer or no writer). Then why is it, that writers often get trapped into the whirlpools of their own thoughts and imagination.

Creative Writing Process:Problems Associated

All of us have a story to tell, an experience to share or a joke to crack. When it comes to verbal uttering, there are no confines. But the blow lands, when you have to take your imagination to the word-mill. Suddenly you seem to lose all of your grain in thin air, standing dumbfound, unable to balance your creative writing process.

Nevertheless there is a strong personal belief of mine, ‘if you can think, so can you write.’

Thinking, either forced (problem solving) or natural (intuition, wonder, perception) is an ongoing process, 24/7 for all of us. So, we will be talking about the barriers that obliterate the transformation of mental imagery into the coveted blood lines__ words, sentences, and paragraphs!

I would classify “Lack of a Systemized Pattern” to be the culprit.

The mental course of creative writing process is an embedded flow of intuitive-ideas, plans, scenes and characters. When it comes to writing these down, the actual hurdle is the lack of connectors.

You have a story to tell. You have visualized it enough and know the characters, events, associated feelings and additional ramifications, by heart.

You say, ‘It was really easy to visualize. A Breeze!’

‘Is that really so?’

Till your ideas were ‘imagery”, it was, but the moment you sit to transform them into words, you start panicking. This is the hard part, when one has to sit and pen down his/her imagery into words. It does not happen due to lack of words or poor grammar, rather it is a matter of not converging imagination and preparation, together.

We know WHAT TO TELL.

We little do know HOW TO TELL.

But, we do not know the best WAY TO TELL.

…and this tends to be the first step towards a writer’s death knell.

How to Use Mental Connectors for Creative Writing Process

A writer’s dilemma is most often referred to as Writer’s Block but there is more to it, than only that. A writer during creative writing process, might get caught up in beginnings, middle or the end. But if he makes use of the right set of tools, i.e. perceptive utilization of CONNECTORS, he can fairly escape the tight spots. Whilst writing, one should synthesize the ideas with the words that are being produced.

Connectors are mental anchors that churn out the imagery produced and synthesize them into words. For creative writing process, you have to think creatively but write smartly and this is what connectors do. They plan out and strategize your imagination during the writing process, so you stay focused and do not get out of line.Since creative thinking and analytical writing are the hand maids of creative writing process, so there are a few rules to follow.

Thinking is free form but writing is not. When you are writing from your own thinking, you need to get the mental connectors working, so you do not topple over your own ideas during the creative writing process.

Critical Thinking and Analytical Writing

Critical thinking and analytical writing are two sides of the same coin. When you are asked to write down an analysis or logical explanation for something, you are actually being told to think critically. But, what is it about critical thinking that scares the hell out of students during their college years?

One plausible answer: “they do not know how to think critically.”

But this is not believable since every day in our lives we are “checking out”, “making decisions”, “taking action”, and “thinking over things”.

‘Do these not account for critical thinking?’

‘Of course they do.’

‘Then where does the Catch 22 lie?’

Critical Thinking and Analytical Writing: Problems Associated

The catch lies in those snobbish grey cells that refuse to budge when ASKED to think critically and then take action (i.e. churning out an analytical piece of writing in this case). We never want to be instructed or dictated when it comes to THINKING.

Whether you are an ideal optimist, a freaky pessimist, or a stuck up snob, you would never want to switch lanes, especially when it particularly refers to one’s mental alignment. But, when it is about attending to a project with your grades dangling at the other end, one has to go for a bit of mental makeover.

Everyone knows how to think, but it is the focused approach to get out PARTICULAR RESULTS, that is often a little amiss. And this is what we will be discussing here.

Critical Thinking: The Cat Approach

Ever wondered how would have cats scored in writing prompts, had been given the chance?

Though I never happened to interview one, but if you have been living with cats for about two decades, then one tends to make a few observations.

In my opinion, they would have grabbed straight A’s in critical thinking and analytical writing.

The reason is very simple.

Cats tend to observe but more than observation they CALCULATE. They test waters, makes decisions and takes actions, not on gut instincts, but on the principle of scrutiny. The scrutinization of a cat rests on consideration, evaluation and assessment. It screens out the situation, evaluates the pros and cons and then figures out a verdict.

Analytical Writing: The Dog Approach

What about the dogs. How would have they scored?

They would have definitely screwed up badly on their score sheets for critical analysis or defining angles. But a just appraisal would have credited them some solid marks for showing a bold approach and BARKING OUT the relevant bits and pieces.

Dogs do not think, they act on the spur. And that is exactly why; they need to be taken seriously whilst defining writing approaches.

Write ups have to be strategic so they do not lose the concentration of readers. But they also need to have personal passion showing through the lines to hook up a reader’s interest. Passion and creativity can never be planned or set up so you just have to bark it out.

The “dog approach” tends to be ferocious and rightly outward in its expressions. This gives a personal mark up and assertion to a draft that brings in notice and natural curiosity.

What We Learn About Critical Thinking and Analytical Writing

The best writing pieces are a combination of both tendencies: cat-thinking and dog-writing. A well-to-do piece of work necessarily includes a natural flow that never misses on important things. On the same end, the attention to detail is crafted in the write-up so naturally that a reader gets an embedded feel of immaculate brilliance.

There is always a faint hint of timidity when you are assembling data or material and are in the due process of evaluation. One is cautious and alert, not to miss on anything and to include all the necessary details. This is set off when you began shooting it down like a dog. You are not thinking anymore since that has been done and the materials reaped. Now you are passion-painting on a board with your pack of strategic colors.

So for a good write-up we take on our creative cells, set them to work, keep an eye on where-it-is-going and add and subtract necessities and extras respectively. You write like a dog but behind the scenes the scripting is done by the savvy cat and THIS is the secret to bring out the best in critical thinking and analytical writing projects.
