Thesis Writing Guide for Graduate Students
Ok Guys! the biggest nightmare has finally taken its shape and is going to haunt you in your real time.
Yes!!! It is time to do that thesis writing AGAIN! That means you have a whole mess ball to untangle including thesis statements, juggling with titles, citations and then formatting the just right conclusion.
No matter how good you are with your writing skills, thesis writing is one task, you will be spending and devoting a lot of your time to. More than likely, you will be assigned a guidance counselor – also referred to as a project coordinator – who will be guiding you throughout the course of your dissertation; from the point of the proposal submission to the final conclusion submission, the coordinator is your human thesis writing guide.
While you can browse through the whole series of posts compiled with step by step guide on thesis writing the first thing you should be aware of is the generic structure of your thesis.
The thesis proposal serves as your thesis outline; you will be allocating a title for your thesis, briefing the counselor on the literature review, state the objectives you look to achieve through writing the thesis, the problem definition, the methodology you will incorporate in conducting research for the problem you are exploring or describing and the resources you will require
Once your proposal has been accepted by the project coordinator, you will start working on building the introduction. The introduction is a compilation of all the references you can find that support your dissertation hypothesis. For example, if your hypothesis says that “Small & Medium enterprises can benefit from the implementation of Cloud Computing”, you will gather all the references, quotes and citations that support your claim
In the literature review, you conduct an in depth analysis of the topic or subject that you have chosen for your thesis. For example, if you have chosen “Cloud Computing” as the subject of your interest, you will be covering the complete history of Cloud Computing, explain the various types of architectures and infrastructures that Cloud Computing is composed of, the advantages and disadvantages of Cloud Computing, explain how Cloud Computing differs from other technologies of its kind etc.
In the methodology portion, you will talk about how you intend to conduct your research & gather the data that will validate your hypothesis i.e. whether you wish to gather data through surveys, questionnaires, interviews, observation etc. You will also be defining & explaining each of these types of research methods in the methodology portion.
Data Collection & Analysis
This portion pertains to how you gathered the data, any experience worth mentioning during the data collection process, and through which statistical method you analyzed the gathered data
The conclusion will talk about the outcomes of your data analysis. Your objective, obviously, will be to validate your hypothesis but the data analysis cannot be biased and should be based on real figures and true calculations
Before you start writing your own dissertation, you will need to consult and go through previously written thesis papers relevant to your subject. The thesis writing format should be finalized after consultation with your counselor and the coordinator should be kept abreast with all developments; after each phase of the thesis is completed.
